About Satin and Sateen Bed Linen

What is the difference between Satin and Sateen?

Satin and Sateen are very similar, and in fact use exactly the same weaving process to achieve a shiny, silky surface. Officially there is a difference: satin is a term that should only be applied to material woven from long staple fibres, such as silk, and more commonly these days, polyester. By comparison cotton only has short staple fibres. Therefore officially a material using the satin weaving technique in cotton should be referred to as sateen. Sometimes it is referred to as "Cotton Sateen" or "Cotton Satin" and this then becomes shortened to just Satin. Either way, the fabric has a super smooth and glossy surface with a high sheen.

Satin Bedding

It is quite difficult to find bed linen made from satin these days. This probably has much to do with changing fashions, and in particular a preference for bed linen in natural materials. And since a natural satin would have to be made from silk, this would prove very expensive. So bedding manufacturers prefer to use the satin weaving process, but with other materials, including cotton (to make sateen) or man made fibres.

Satin Design Features

Many bedding designers also like to use satin as a design feature in their bedding range, such as satin stitches, pleats or stripes. This can instantly give a lift to the duvet cover, making it shine with life and reflect the light, without it being overpowering.
